Recovery position

Unresponsive but breathing normally, no suspected spinal injury

1CHECK

Confirm the person is breathing normally. Call 911.

2ARM

Kneel beside them. Place the near arm at a right angle to the body, palm up.

3HAND

Bring the far arm across the chest and hold the back of that hand against the near cheek.

4KNEE

With your other hand, bend the far knee up and pull it toward you to roll the person onto their side.

5AIRWAY

Tilt the head back slightly so the airway stays open and fluid can drain from the mouth.

6MONITOR

Check breathing regularly. If breathing stops, roll them onto the back and start CPR.

Remember
  • If you suspect a spinal injury, do not move the person unless the airway is at risk.
  • A pregnant woman should be placed on her left side.
