Tap the foot and shout. Look for breathing for no more than 10 seconds.
If alone, give 2 minutes of CPR before calling 911 unless the collapse was sudden and witnessed. Put the phone on speaker.
Two fingers on the breastbone just below the nipple line. Press about 1.5 inches (4 cm) deep, 100 to 120 per minute.
After 30 compressions, tilt the head gently to neutral, cover the mouth and nose with your mouth and give 2 gentle puffs, watching the chest rise.
Continue 30 compressions and 2 breaths. Two rescuers: 15 compressions and 2 breaths using the two-thumb technique.
Use pediatric pads if available; if not, adult pads with one on the chest and one on the back.
- Do not tilt the head back as far as in an adult; the infant's airway is easily blocked by over-extension.
- Choking infant: 5 back blows then 5 chest thrusts, never abdominal thrusts.
