Your POCUS Learning Journey

1

Physics Foundation

Understand how ultrasound works well enough to troubleshoot image quality and artifacts.

2

Knobology Mastery

Learn to optimize depth, gain, and focus. Master probe types and their applications.

3

Core Applications

Master the examinations used across all specialties: cardiac, lung, abdominal, vascular.

4

Integration

Learn to incorporate POCUS into clinical workflows and documentation requirements.

Cardiac POCUS Training

Focused Cardiac Ultrasound

The heart is visible with ultrasound, and basic cardiac assessment answers critical bedside questions. Learn to obtain and interpret:

  • Parasternal long and short axis views
  • Apical four-chamber view
  • Subcostal cardiac and IVC views
  • Pericardial effusion assessment
  • Gross LV function evaluation
  • Right heart strain patterns

Lung & Pleural Ultrasound

Lung ultrasound has revolutionized respiratory assessment. In minutes, differentiate causes of dyspnea:

  • Pleural effusion
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pulmonary edema (B-lines)
  • Consolidation
  • Atelectasis
  • ARDS patterns
  • Lung sliding assessment
  • Diaphragm evaluation

Lung ultrasound outperforms chest X-ray for many diagnoses and provides real-time assessment.

Abdominal & Vascular Fundamentals

Core abdominal and vascular applications that benefit every specialty:

  • Abdominal aorta measurement and AAA detection
  • Right upper quadrant: gallbladder and biliary assessment
  • Kidney evaluation and hydronephrosis
  • Bladder volume assessment
  • Free fluid detection (FAST views)
  • DVT compression ultrasound technique
Ultrasound-Guided Procedures

Procedural Guidance Fundamentals

Ultrasound guidance improves safety and success rates. Learn the foundational skills:

  • In-plane vs. out-of-plane needle visualization
  • Peripheral IV placement guidance
  • Central line site selection and guidance
  • Paracentesis and thoracentesis targeting
  • Abscess localization
  • Ergonomics and sterile technique

Frequently Asked Questions

This course is designed for any healthcare provider who wants to incorporate bedside ultrasound into their practice. This includes emergency physicians, hospitalists, intensivists, primary care providers, surgeons, anesthesiologists, APPs, and even medical students seeking foundational skills.

POCUS Fundamentals provides the core knowledge and skills that underpin all point-of-care ultrasound applications. You'll learn physics, image optimization, and the most universally applicable examinations. Specialty courses then build on this foundation.

No prior experience is required. We start with ultrasound physics, probe handling, and image optimization before progressing to diagnostic applications. However, even experienced users often find value in refining their foundational techniques.

Core examinations include: focused cardiac (parasternal, apical, subcostal views), lung/pleural ultrasound, abdominal aorta, IVC for volume status, basic abdominal (RUQ, kidney, bladder), DVT compression, and procedural guidance fundamentals.

The online course includes our AI image interpretation platform with thousands of clips. Live hands-on sessions are available where you'll scan standardized patients and models under expert supervision. Both components are recommended for comprehensive training.

POCUS Fundamentals awards 12 AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits. This meets or exceeds basic credentialing requirements at most institutions and provides a solid foundation for specialty-specific ultrasound training.
