What this track covers
This track covers point-of-care ultrasound as used in emergency care, including the physics and machine settings that shape image quality and the acquisition technique for each core application. It focuses on integrating eFAST, focused cardiac, and aortic views into time-sensitive decision-making, plus using ultrasound to guide procedures.
What you will practice
- Selecting probe type and adjusting depth, gain, and focus for a given view
- Acquiring RUQ, LUQ, and pelvic views for free fluid assessment
- Obtaining subxiphoid and parasternal cardiac windows
- Scanning bilateral thoracic views to evaluate for pneumothorax
- Deciding how a positive or equivocal finding changes the next step in a trauma workup
Simulator scenario
A hypotensive trauma patient arrives after a motor vehicle collision, and the clinician must perform and interpret an eFAST exam under time pressure to guide the resuscitation decision.
