Metabolic Syndrome Management
You'll be able to diagnose metabolic syndrome, sequence lifestyle and pharmacologic treatment, and manage cardiovascular and hepatic risk in affected patients.
What this track covers
This track covers the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and adipose dysfunction, current diagnostic criteria, and the full treatment continuum from lifestyle intervention to pharmacotherapy. It also addresses associated cardiovascular risk assessment and hepatic manifestations such as NAFLD/MASLD.
What you will practice
- Apply diagnostic criteria to identify metabolic syndrome from a patient's labs and exam findings
- Sequence lifestyle interventions before or alongside pharmacotherapy
- Select among metformin, GLP-1 agents, SGLT2 inhibitors, and lipid-lowering agents based on patient profile
- Estimate ASCVD risk and set appropriate prevention targets
- Recognize and monitor hepatic manifestations of metabolic syndrome
Simulator scenario
A simulated patient with central obesity, elevated fasting glucose, and dyslipidemia who needs a stepwise workup and a treatment plan addressing metabolic, cardiovascular, and hepatic risk.
Board question topics
- Applying ATP III and IDF diagnostic criteria
- Choosing pharmacotherapy for metabolic syndrome
- ASCVD risk assessment and prevention
- NAFLD/MASLD monitoring and management
