What this track covers
This track covers point-of-care and diagnostic abdominal ultrasound across the major organ systems clinicians are asked to evaluate: hepatobiliary, renal, aortic, splenic, and pancreatic. It emphasizes systematic scanning approach, image optimization, and pattern recognition for common findings like gallstones, hydronephrosis, and free fluid, rather than isolated facts.
What you will practice
- Work through a systematic gallbladder scanning approach and identify sonographic Murphy's sign
- Distinguish normal liver echotexture from patterns suggesting fatty infiltration or cirrhosis
- Recognize hydronephrosis and renal stones across different grades of severity
- Practice measuring aortic diameter and identifying features suggesting aneurysm or dissection
- Differentiate free intraperitoneal fluid from loculated collections in dependent spaces

A patient presenting with right upper quadrant pain where the virtual patient's history and sonographic findings guide the clinician toward differentiating biliary colic from acute cholecystitis.
