Virtual Care Communication Skills
Build rapport, read nonverbal cues, and navigate difficult conversations effectively when the entire encounter happens on a screen.
What this track covers
Video visits strip away many of the physical cues clinicians rely on for rapport and assessment, so communication technique has to compensate deliberately. This track covers presence and active listening on camera, adapting nonverbal communication for a video frame, and handling sensitive conversations, cultural differences, and family or caregiver involvement in a virtual setting.
What you will practice
- Opening a video visit to establish presence and eye contact through the camera
- Using verbal active-listening techniques when visual cues are limited
- Reading and projecting nonverbal signals within a webcam frame
- Structuring a conversation about non-adherence or bad news over video
- Bringing a remote family member or caregiver into the visit without losing focus on the patient
Simulator scenario
A virtual visit where the patient is guarded about admitting they've stopped taking a prescribed medication, requiring the clinician to build trust and address non-adherence over video.
Board question topics
- Techniques for establishing rapport in video-based encounters
- Verbal cues that substitute for in-person nonverbal communication
- Approaches to delivering difficult news remotely
- Considerations for multi-participant virtual visits with caregivers present
