Asynchronous Telemedicine and Store-and-Forward Care
You'll be able to triage, document, and manage patient encounters conducted through secure messaging and e-consults rather than live video or in-person visits.
What this track covers
This track covers store-and-forward care: patient messages, photos, and history reviewed and answered outside a live encounter. It addresses which complaints are appropriate for async management versus needing escalation to synchronous or in-person care, and how to communicate clearly and document defensibly when there's no real-time back-and-forth.
What you will practice
- Deciding whether a patient message is appropriate for async response or needs escalation
- Requesting the right follow-up information when a message lacks key details
- Writing clear, patient-facing responses that avoid ambiguity
- Documenting clinical reasoning for a decision made without a live exam
- Recognizing red-flag language in patient messages that warrants urgent follow-up
Simulator scenario
A patient sends a secure message describing a worsening skin lesion with photos attached, and the clinician must decide whether to manage it asynchronously, request more information, or escalate to a live visit.
Board question topics
- Recognizing red flags in asynchronous patient messages
- Appropriate scope of store-and-forward evaluation
- Documentation standards for non-real-time encounters
- When to escalate async care to synchronous or in-person visits
