Reading Sleep Studies
Score PSG and home sleep test recordings systematically and generate a clinically sound interpretation.
What this track covers
This track covers polysomnography and home sleep apnea test interpretation, from signal and montage recognition through sleep staging, respiratory and cardiac/movement event scoring, and AHI/RDI calculation. It also addresses home sleep testing limitations and when a confirmatory in-lab study is warranted, ending with structured report writing.
What you will practice
- Recognize electrode montages and identify common signal artifacts
- Stage sleep epochs using standard EEG, EOG, and EMG criteria
- Differentiate obstructive, central, and mixed apneas from hypopneas and RERAs
- Calculate AHI and RDI from scored events
- Decide when a home sleep test result requires confirmatory in-lab PSG
Simulator scenario
A virtual patient with a home sleep test showing an ambiguous AHI, where the clinician must decide whether the result is diagnostic or requires in-lab confirmation.
Board question topics
- Sleep stage identification from epoch tracings
- Respiratory event classification and scoring rules
- AHI versus RDI calculation
- Home sleep test limitations and escalation to PSG
