PTSD Treatment Protocols
You'll be able to evaluate a patient with suspected PTSD, select an evidence-based treatment path, and explain the rationale for trauma-focused therapy versus pharmacotherapy.
What this track covers
This track covers assessment and treatment planning for post-traumatic stress disorder, including trauma-focused psychotherapies such as Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and EMDR, alongside pharmacologic options. It also addresses adaptations for complex trauma and common comorbid presentations.
What you will practice
- Differentiate PTSD from acute stress reaction and other trauma-related presentations
- Interpret PCL-5 and CAPS-5 findings to inform diagnosis and severity
- Match a patient's presentation to CPT, PE, or EMDR based on clinical factors
- Identify first-line medications and augmentation strategies for PTSD symptoms, including nightmares
- Adjust the treatment plan for complex PTSD or significant comorbidity
Simulator scenario
A timed simulator case where a patient presents with recurring nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance six months after a traumatic event, requiring the clinician to assess severity and propose an initial treatment plan.
Board question topics
- PTSD diagnostic criteria and symptom clusters
- Trauma-focused psychotherapy modalities and mechanisms
- Pharmacotherapy choices for PTSD and associated symptoms
- Management of complex trauma and comorbid conditions
