Ketamine and Esketamine for Depression
You'll be able to evaluate a patient for treatment-resistant depression, select an appropriate ketamine or esketamine pathway, and monitor safely through and after administration.
What this track covers
This track covers IV ketamine and intranasal esketamine for treatment-resistant depression, from mechanism and patient selection through administration safety and post-treatment monitoring. It also addresses REMS requirements for esketamine and how a monitoring workflow fits into ongoing patient care.
What you will practice
- Screen a patient for treatment-resistant depression and identify contraindications
- Differentiate when IV ketamine versus intranasal esketamine may be considered
- Set up a monitoring plan for dissociative effects and vital signs during administration
- Recognize and respond to adverse events during or after a session
- Apply esketamine REMS monitoring requirements to a clinic workflow
Simulator scenario
A patient with treatment-resistant depression presents for an initial esketamine session and develops dissociative symptoms and a blood pressure change during the monitored observation period.
Board question topics
- Patient selection criteria for treatment-resistant depression
- REMS requirements for esketamine administration
- Monitoring parameters during ketamine/esketamine sessions
- Recognizing and managing adverse events post-administration
