What this track covers
This track covers ultrasound identification and characterization of pleural effusions, safe needle and catheter technique, and interpretation of pleural fluid studies. It also addresses recognizing and preventing the procedure's major complications, including pneumothorax and re-expansion pulmonary edema.
What you will practice
- Identify and quantify pleural effusion on ultrasound
- Select an optimal insertion site while avoiding intercostal vessels and the diaphragm
- Choose between diagnostic and large-volume therapeutic drainage
- Apply Light's criteria to differentiate transudative from exudative effusions
- Recognize early signs of pneumothorax or re-expansion pulmonary edema
