What this track covers
This track covers the clinical reasoning behind office-based minor surgery: preparing the procedure space, selecting and administering local anesthesia, managing common skin lesions and nail conditions, and closing and monitoring wounds. It also addresses recognizing and responding to procedural complications.
What you will practice
- Assess whether a lesion or wound is appropriate for an office setting versus referral
- Select an anesthetic approach based on procedure type and patient factors
- Work through sterile field setup and equipment selection for a given procedure
- Choose a wound closure technique based on location, tension, and contamination risk
- Identify early signs of a procedural complication and decide on next steps
Simulator scenario
A patient presents with a suspected infected epidermoid cyst, and the clinician must decide on incision and drainage versus referral while managing the conversation and documentation.
