Laceration Repair
Assess, prepare, and close a range of lacerations using appropriate suturing techniques for the wound type and location.
What this track covers
This track covers the full arc of laceration management: systematic wound assessment and closure timing decisions, local anesthesia and wound prep, core suturing patterns for different wound types, and closure approaches aimed at minimizing scarring in cosmetically sensitive areas.
What you will practice
- Assess wound depth, contamination, and tissue viability to decide primary vs. delayed closure
- Select an anesthetic approach and technique appropriate to the wound site
- Choose a suture pattern based on wound tension, depth, and location
- Recognize wounds needing referral (tendon, nerve, joint, or high-contamination injuries)
- Apply layered closure and technique choices that reduce visible scarring
Simulator scenario
A patient presents with a jagged forearm laceration from a fall, and the clinician must assess contamination, decide on closure timing, and select an appropriate repair technique within the visit.
Board question topics
- Wound assessment and closure timing decisions
- Local anesthetic technique selection
- Suture pattern selection by wound type
- Indications for specialist referral in wound repair
