Sports Physicals and Clearance
You'll be able to run an efficient pre-participation exam and reach a defensible, well-documented clearance decision.
What this track covers
This track covers the pre-participation physical exam from history through clearance, including cardiac and musculoskeletal screening, concussion history, and considerations for special populations such as athletes with chronic conditions or the female athlete triad. It's built for clinicians who perform PPEs in primary care, urgent care, or school-based settings and need a consistent, efficient approach.
What you will practice
- Screen personal and family cardiac history for red flags warranting further workup
- Perform a focused 2-minute musculoskeletal screening exam
- Take a concussion history and weigh it against clearance criteria
- Identify special-population considerations, including the female athlete triad
- Distinguish full, conditional, restricted, and disqualifying clearance decisions
Simulator scenario
A timed case with a teenage athlete reporting exertional chest tightness and a family history of sudden cardiac death, requiring the clinician to decide whether to clear, restrict, or refer before workup.
Board question topics
- Cardiac red flags on PPE history and exam
- Musculoskeletal screening exam findings
- Concussion history and return-to-play considerations
- Clearance categories and documentation
