Sports Medicine for Primary Care
Diagnose and manage common musculoskeletal injuries, guide concussion recovery, and clear athletes for return to play with a structured, evidence-based approach.
What this track covers
This track covers the musculoskeletal complaints and sports-related concerns that come up most often in primary care: shoulder, knee, ankle, and spine exams, common overuse and acute injuries, concussion assessment, pre-participation evaluation, and rehabilitation planning. It's built for clinicians who manage active patients and need a consistent framework for diagnosis, conservative management, and return-to-activity decisions.
What you will practice
- Work through a systematic joint exam with special tests for shoulder, knee, ankle, and spine complaints
- Differentiate sprains, strains, tendinopathies, and stress fractures based on history and exam findings
- Apply a sideline concussion assessment and track symptoms through return-to-learn and return-to-play stages
- Structure a pre-participation exam, including cardiac screening questions and clearance decisions
- Build a progressive rehabilitation plan using criteria-based milestones for return to sport
Simulator scenario
A high school athlete presents after a collision during practice with knee pain and swelling, requiring a focused history, exam with special tests, and a decision on imaging versus conservative management.
Board question topics
- Special tests for common shoulder and knee injuries
- Concussion symptom tracking and return-to-play criteria
- Pre-participation cardiac screening red flags
- Rehabilitation progression and return-to-sport criteria
