Advanced Lipid Management
You'll be able to select and sequence advanced lipid-lowering therapy, including PCSK9 inhibitors and other non-statin agents, for patients who don't reach LDL goals on statins alone.
What this track covers
This track covers lipid management beyond first-line statin therapy: risk stratification with ASCVD scoring and coronary artery calcium, optimizing statin intensity and managing intolerance, and adding non-statin agents such as PCSK9 inhibitors, bempedoic acid, ezetimibe, and inclisiran. It also addresses special cases like familial hypercholesterolemia, elevated Lp(a), and hypertriglyceridemia.
What you will practice
- Calculating ASCVD risk and applying risk enhancers to set LDL targets
- Choosing high-intensity statin regimens and troubleshooting statin intolerance
- Identifying candidates for PCSK9 inhibitor therapy and navigating prior authorization
- Sequencing non-statin add-on therapies when LDL goals aren't met
- Recognizing and managing familial hypercholesterolemia and severe hypertriglyceridemia
Simulator scenario
A patient on high-intensity statin therapy with persistently elevated LDL returns for follow-up, requiring the clinician to reassess risk, address possible statin intolerance, and decide on next-step therapy.
Board question topics
- ASCVD risk calculation and risk enhancers
- Statin intensity selection and intolerance management
- PCSK9 inhibitor and non-statin therapy indications
- Familial hypercholesterolemia and Lp(a) management
