Diabetes Technology and CGM

Read CGM reports, adjust insulin pump settings, and evaluate patients for automated insulin delivery with confidence.

What this track covers

This track covers the technology clinicians now routinely encounter in diabetes care: continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, and hybrid closed-loop systems. It focuses on interpreting the data these devices produce and making sound management decisions from it, not on device sales or setup logistics.

What you will practice

  • Interpret an ambulatory glucose profile and identify time-in-range, variability, and hypoglycemia patterns
  • Distinguish sensor artifact from a true glycemic trend on a CGM trace
  • Walk through basal rate and bolus ratio adjustments in response to pump data
  • Identify which patients are reasonable candidates for a hybrid closed-loop system
  • Recognize when a device data pattern warrants a medication or behavior change versus a device troubleshooting step

Simulator scenario

A simulator case where the patient brings in two weeks of CGM data showing overnight hypoglycemia and the clinician must interpret the pattern and decide on a basal adjustment.

Board question topics

  • Reading time-in-range and glucose variability metrics
  • Differentiating CGM sensor error from real glycemic events
  • Insulin pump basal and bolus adjustment logic
  • Patient selection criteria for closed-loop systems
