Adolescent Health Assessment
You'll be able to screen, counsel, and manage teenage patients across confidentiality, mental health, substance use, reproductive health, and LGBTQ+ care with a structured, teen-friendly approach.
What this track covers
This track covers the clinical and communication skills specific to adolescent care: applying minor consent and confidentiality rules, screening for depression, anxiety, suicide risk, and substance use, and counseling teens on reproductive health and gender-affirming care. It emphasizes structured tools like HEEADSSS, CRAFFT, PHQ-A, and GAD-7 alongside the judgment calls needed when talking with reluctant or guarded adolescent patients.
What you will practice
- Apply minor consent and confidentiality rules when a parent requests visit details
- Conduct a HEEADSSS interview with a guarded or reluctant teen
- Screen for depression and suicide risk using PHQ-A and follow-up questioning
- Use CRAFFT results to guide a brief motivational-interviewing conversation about vaping or substance use
- Counsel a teen on contraception options and STI testing in a confidential visit
Simulator scenario
A 16-year-old presents for a sports physical but seems withdrawn, giving you a timed scenario to build rapport, run a HEEADSSS assessment, and decide whether further mental health or substance use screening is warranted.
Board question topics
- Minor consent and confidentiality exceptions
- Interpreting CRAFFT and PHQ-A screening results
- Suicide risk assessment in adolescents
- Contraception and STI counseling for teens
