Comprehensive Eye Examination

Perform a complete, systematic eye examination from visual acuity through fundoscopy with confidence in your findings and documentation.

What this track covers

This track covers the full outpatient eye exam: visual acuity and pinhole testing, pupil assessment including RAPD, external and anterior segment inspection, ocular motility, and direct fundoscopy. It emphasizes recognizing normal versus abnormal findings and knowing when a finding warrants referral.

What you will practice

  • Perform and document Snellen and pinhole visual acuity testing
  • Distinguish normal pupil reflexes from an afferent pupillary defect
  • Systematically inspect the external eye and anterior segment for abnormalities
  • Test extraocular movements and interpret cover-uncover findings
  • Recognize fundoscopic findings that require urgent referral

Simulator scenario

A patient presents with sudden unilateral vision change, requiring a full stepwise eye exam to localize the problem and decide on urgency of referral.

Board question topics

  • Interpreting relative afferent pupillary defect
  • Differentiating causes of red eye on external exam
  • Cover-uncover test interpretation
  • Optic disc findings and referral thresholds
