Obstetric Emergencies
Recognize and respond to the obstetric emergencies most likely to threaten a mother or fetus in minutes, not hours.
What this track covers
This track covers rapid recognition and stepwise management of postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia and eclampsia, shoulder dystocia, cord prolapse, and placental abruption. It emphasizes the early warning signs, sequenced interventions, and team communication that distinguish a controlled response from a chaotic one.
What you will practice
- Identify early signs of postpartum hemorrhage and sequence interventions from uterine massage through escalation
- Distinguish preeclampsia with severe features from eclampsia and outline the management pathway for each
- Work through the shoulder dystocia maneuver sequence using the HELPERR framework
- Recognize cord prolapse on exam and identify the immediate steps before delivery
- Practice closed-loop communication and role assignment during a simulated obstetric crisis
Simulator scenario
A laboring patient develops sudden fetal bradycardia after rupture of membranes, and the clinician must recognize cord prolapse and direct the team through immediate positioning and delivery steps under time pressure.
Board question topics
- Recognizing severe features of preeclampsia
- Stepwise escalation in postpartum hemorrhage management
- HELPERR maneuver sequence for shoulder dystocia
- Distinguishing placental abruption from other causes of third-trimester bleeding
