Labor and Delivery Management
You'll be able to assess labor progress, interpret fetal monitoring, and decide when intervention is warranted across all three stages of labor.
What this track covers
This track covers labor assessment from admission through delivery and immediate postpartum recovery, including cervical exam findings, fetal presentation, and labor diagnosis. It emphasizes recognizing normal progression versus dystocia, interpreting electronic fetal monitoring, and choosing among augmentation, operative delivery, and cesarean when complications arise.
What you will practice
- Distinguish normal labor progression from arrest or protraction patterns
- Interpret fetal heart rate tracings using standard terminology and choose a response
- Decide when amniotomy or labor augmentation is appropriate
- Recognize indications for operative vaginal delivery versus cesarean
- Assess immediate postpartum status and identify hemorrhage risk early
Simulator scenario
A simulator case following a laboring patient from admission through an evolving fetal heart rate tracing that requires the clinician to decide between continued observation, intrauterine resuscitation measures, and expedited delivery.
Board question topics
- NICHD fetal heart rate tracing categories
- Labor dystocia recognition and management
- Indications for operative vaginal delivery
- Immediate postpartum hemorrhage risk assessment
