Sleep Disorders in Neurology
Work through the evaluation and management of common and complex sleep disorders, from narcolepsy and REM behavior disorder to sleep-disordered breathing and parasomnias.
What this track covers
This track covers the neurological basis of sleep and the recognition, workup, and management of the disorders that disrupt it, including hypersomnias, REM sleep disorders, sleep-related movement disorders, and parasomnias. It emphasizes how history, exam findings, and sleep study data fit together to guide a differential and a management plan.
What you will practice
- Distinguish type 1 from type 2 narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia using history and testing patterns
- Recognize REM sleep behavior disorder and weigh its significance as a prodromal symptom
- Differentiate obstructive, central, and treatment-emergent sleep apnea and reason through PAP therapy adjustments
- Work up restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder, including secondary causes to rule out
- Separate NREM parasomnias from nocturnal seizures and other mimics using clinical clues
Simulator scenario
A patient presents with excessive daytime sleepiness and episodes of sudden muscle weakness triggered by laughter, requiring the clinician to build a differential and decide on next diagnostic steps.
Board question topics
- Narcolepsy type 1 vs type 2 differentiation
- REM sleep behavior disorder and synucleinopathy risk
- Sleep apnea subtypes and PAP troubleshooting
- Restless legs syndrome workup and mimics
