Neurological Examination

You'll be able to perform a systematic neurological exam and localize findings to a specific site along the neuraxis.

What this track covers

This track covers the complete bedside neuro exam: mental status, cranial nerves, motor and sensory testing, reflexes, coordination, and gait. The focus is on building a repeatable exam sequence and using the pattern of findings to localize a lesion rather than memorizing isolated maneuvers.

What you will practice

  • Sequencing a full neuro exam without skipping steps under time pressure
  • Distinguishing upper motor neuron from lower motor neuron weakness patterns
  • Correlating sensory loss distribution with a specific nerve, root, or cord level
  • Grading deep tendon reflexes and recognizing pathological reflexes
  • Using gait abnormalities to narrow the differential and localize pathology

Simulator scenario

A patient presenting with acute unilateral weakness and facial droop, where the clinician must perform a focused neuro exam and localize the lesion before deciding on next steps.

Board question topics

  • Localizing weakness patterns along the neuraxis
  • Cranial nerve exam findings and their anatomical correlates
  • Interpreting reflex and coordination abnormalities
  • Gait pattern recognition and differential localization
