Concussion Assessment and Management
You'll be able to evaluate a suspected concussion, apply a structured return-to-activity progression, and recognize when persistent symptoms need a broader workup.
What this track covers
This track covers sideline and clinic-based concussion recognition, focused neurological and vestibular exam findings, and neurocognitive testing interpretation. It also addresses graduated return-to-play decision-making and the evaluation of patients with persistent post-concussive symptoms, including special considerations for pediatric and repetitive-impact populations.
What you will practice
- Recognize red flags requiring urgent neuroimaging or referral after head injury
- Perform a focused sideline assessment including balance and orientation checks
- Interpret vestibular and oculomotor exam findings in a post-concussive patient
- Sequence a graduated return-to-activity progression and identify criteria to pause or advance it
- Differentiate expected recovery from persistent post-concussive syndrome requiring multidisciplinary management
Simulator scenario
A high school athlete presents to clinic three days after a suspected sideline head injury with headache and dizziness, and the clinician must decide on activity restrictions and next steps.
Board question topics
- Sideline recognition and immediate removal-from-play criteria
- Graduated return-to-play progression steps
- Distinguishing normal recovery from post-concussive syndrome
- Special considerations in pediatric head injury
