Pre-Travel Consultation and Vaccination
You'll be able to run a systematic pre-travel risk assessment, select appropriate vaccines and malaria prophylaxis, and work up a returned traveler with fever.
What this track covers
This track covers the pre-travel consultation from itinerary review through vaccine and chemoprophylaxis decisions, plus the syndromic evaluation of illness after travel. It addresses routine, required, and destination-specific vaccines, malaria prevention strategies, traveler's diarrhea, and special populations such as pregnant, pediatric, and immunocompromised travelers.
What you will practice
- Take a structured travel itinerary and translate it into a destination-specific risk profile
- Decide which vaccines are routine, required, or recommended for a given trip
- Select and counsel on a malaria chemoprophylaxis regimen based on regional resistance patterns
- Build a self-treatment plan for traveler's diarrhea and identify red flags needing evaluation
- Apply a syndromic approach to fever in a returned traveler, including incubation-period reasoning
Simulator scenario
A patient presents with fever and fatigue ten days after returning from a rural trip to South Asia, and the clinician must build a differential and workup using itinerary, exposures, and incubation timing.
Board question topics
- Routine versus required travel vaccines
- Malaria chemoprophylaxis selection by region
- Traveler's diarrhea self-treatment criteria
- Fever in the returned traveler differential
