Geriatric Syndromes Study Track
You'll be able to recognize and manage the syndromes that most often complicate care in older adults, including delirium, incontinence, and frailty.
What this track covers
This track covers the geriatric syndromes that cut across specialties and settings: delirium, urinary incontinence, frailty and sarcopenia, pressure injuries, malnutrition, and sleep or sensory decline. It emphasizes structured assessment tools and stepwise management rather than isolated facts, reflecting how these conditions actually present and overlap in aging patients.
What you will practice
- Distinguish delirium from dementia and depression using a structured bedside assessment
- Work through the evaluation pathway for a new episode of urinary incontinence
- Apply a frailty phenotype assessment to guide intervention intensity
- Stage a pressure injury and select an appropriate prevention protocol
- Screen for malnutrition and identify contributing causes in an older adult
Simulator scenario
A timed case simulating an older adult admitted with acute confusion, requiring the clinician to identify precipitating factors, rule out mimics, and choose non-pharmacological management steps.
Board question topics
- Delirium assessment and precipitating factors
- Incontinence subtypes and evaluation
- Frailty and sarcopenia assessment
- Pressure injury staging and prevention
