Elder Abuse Recognition and Reporting

You'll be able to recognize physical, financial, and psychological signs of elder abuse and respond according to your mandatory reporting obligations.

What this track covers

This track covers the recognition of physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse, neglect, self-neglect, and abandonment in older adults, along with the behavioral and environmental red flags that distinguish abuse from age-related changes or medical conditions. It also addresses private patient interviewing, medical-legal documentation, and coordination with Adult Protective Services and law enforcement.

What you will practice

  • Distinguishing abuse-related injuries from falls, coagulopathy, or skin fragility
  • Identifying caregiver behaviors and environmental conditions that raise concern
  • Structuring a private, non-leading patient interview when abuse is suspected
  • Documenting findings in a way that supports medical-legal review
  • Determining when and how to file a mandatory report

Simulator scenario

A simulator case involving an older adult brought in by a caregiver with inconsistent injury explanations, signs of neglect, and reluctance to speak freely during the visit.
