Head and Neck Examination

You'll be able to perform a systematic, efficient head and neck exam and correctly identify common ear, nose, and throat findings.

What this track covers

This track covers the full head and neck exam: otoscopy and tympanic membrane assessment, anterior rhinoscopy and turbinate evaluation, oral cavity and oropharynx inspection, and neck palpation for lymph nodes and thyroid. It's built for clinicians who want a reliable, repeatable exam sequence and sharper pattern recognition for common pathology.

What you will practice

  • Positioning the otoscope and stabilizing the patient's head for a clear tympanic membrane view
  • Distinguishing normal from abnormal tympanic membrane landmarks and mobility
  • Using a nasal speculum to assess turbinates and septal position
  • Sequencing a full oral cavity and oropharynx exam without missing structures
  • Palpating the neck systematically to characterize a mass or lymph node

Simulator scenario

A patient presents with ear pain and decreased hearing, requiring a focused otoscopic exam and differentiation between otitis media and otitis externa.

Board question topics

  • Tympanic membrane findings in otitis media vs. otitis externa
  • Nasal exam findings in allergic vs. non-allergic rhinitis
  • Oropharyngeal findings suggestive of pharyngitis etiology
  • Neck mass characteristics that warrant further workup
