Pediatric Emergencies

You'll be able to rapidly assess a critically ill child and lead a pediatric resuscitation using age-appropriate tools and algorithms.

What this track covers

This track covers recognition and management of the sick or injured child in the emergency setting, from the Pediatric Assessment Triangle through resuscitation, seizures, respiratory failure, and sepsis. It emphasizes how pediatric physiology, equipment, and escalation differ from adult care.

What you will practice

  • Apply the Pediatric Assessment Triangle to identify a sick child at first glance
  • Select age-appropriate vital sign ranges and equipment sizes
  • Walk through PALS-style bradycardia, tachycardia, and pulseless arrest algorithms
  • Decide between IO and IV access when a child is deteriorating
  • Recognize when a seizure, respiratory distress, or fever pattern signals a true emergency

Simulator scenario

A simulated case of an infant brought in with lethargy and poor feeding that progresses to respiratory failure, requiring rapid recognition and escalation.

Board question topics

  • Pediatric Assessment Triangle findings
  • Recognizing pediatric respiratory failure early
  • Approach to the febrile infant
  • Pediatric seizure management priorities
