Advanced Pediatric Emergency Care
Approach critically ill infants and children with a structured, confident process from first recognition through stabilization.
What this track covers
This track covers high-acuity pediatric presentations seen in emergency and urgent care settings, including resuscitation, sepsis, trauma, respiratory failure, and neurologic emergencies. It emphasizes age-based assessment and decision-making for infants, children, and adolescents, including special populations such as neonates and children with complex medical needs.
What you will practice
- Sequence a pediatric resuscitation, including airway management and vascular access decisions
- Recognize early signs of pediatric septic shock and structure a fluid and antibiotic approach
- Run a primary and secondary trauma survey adapted for a child
- Differentiate status asthmaticus, croup, and bronchiolitis by exam findings and course
- Assess altered mental status and seizure in a child, including red flags for meningitis and raised ICP
Simulator scenario
A simulator case of an infant arriving in respiratory distress that progresses to impending respiratory failure, testing recognition, escalation, and airway decision-making under time pressure.
Board question topics
- Pediatric airway and vascular access techniques
- Recognition and staging of pediatric septic shock
- Pediatric trauma survey and head injury red flags
- Differentiating pediatric respiratory emergencies
