What this track covers
This track covers medical response across the disaster lifecycle: incident command and hospital incident command system (HICS) roles, mass casualty triage algorithms, hazard-specific considerations for natural disasters and CBRNE events, and hospital surge capacity and crisis standards of care. It also addresses post-incident recovery, including psychological first aid and community resilience.
What you will practice
- Assign and describe roles within an incident command structure for a simulated event
- Apply START, SALT, or JumpSTART triage to categorize multiple patients quickly
- Identify hazard-specific medical priorities for earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires
- Recognize early signs of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive exposure and initial response steps
- Reason through resource allocation decisions under crisis standards of care during a surge scenario
Simulator scenario
A multi-vehicle collapse scenario where the clinician must triage several simulated patients using START, then activate and communicate through an incident command structure as resources become constrained.
