Sports Cardiology and Athlete Screening
You will be able to distinguish normal athletic cardiac adaptation from underlying pathology and reason through exercise clearance decisions using current guideline criteria.
What this track covers
This track covers the cardiovascular effects of sustained athletic training, structured pre-participation evaluation, and ECG interpretation using athlete-specific criteria. It focuses on separating benign training-related changes from findings that warrant further workup before sports participation.
What you will practice
- Differentiate physiologic athlete's heart from structural or electrical pathology
- Apply a structured pre-participation history and exam approach
- Interpret athlete ECGs using international interpretation criteria
- Recognize red-flag symptoms and family history warranting further cardiac workup
- Reason through return-to-play and clearance decisions with incomplete information
Simulator scenario
A collegiate athlete presents for a pre-participation exam with an incidental ECG finding, and the clinician must decide whether to clear, restrict, or refer before working through the guideline-based reasoning with feedback on the decision.
Board question topics
- Physiologic versus pathologic ECG changes in athletes
- Pre-participation evaluation components and red flags
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and other high-risk conditions in athletes
- Exercise clearance and return-to-play reasoning
