Advanced Dyslipidemia Management
You'll be able to work up and manage complex lipid disorders, from interpreting advanced lipid panels to selecting and sequencing therapy for high-risk and treatment-resistant patients.
What this track covers
This track covers advanced lipid management beyond first-line statin therapy: lipoprotein metabolism and atherogenesis, risk stratification with tools like CAC scoring, and treatment selection for familial hypercholesterolemia, statin intolerance, and severe hypertriglyceridemia. It also covers newer non-statin agents and how they fit alongside established therapies.
What you will practice
- Interpreting a lipid panel beyond LDL, including apoB and Lp(a) when relevant
- Estimating ASCVD risk and applying risk enhancers to adjust treatment thresholds
- Working through statin intolerance and choosing an alternative or add-on strategy
- Recognizing features suggestive of familial hypercholesterolemia and next steps
- Sequencing non-statin therapies for patients not at goal on maximally tolerated statin
Simulator scenario
A patient with a strong family history of early cardiovascular disease and a markedly elevated LDL presents for evaluation, requiring risk assessment and a stepwise treatment plan.
Board question topics
- ASCVD risk calculation and use of risk enhancers
- Statin intolerance evaluation and management
- Diagnostic criteria for familial hypercholesterolemia
- Approach to severe hypertriglyceridemia
