Heart Failure Management Study Track

You'll be able to classify heart failure by type and stage, sequence GDMT initiation and titration, and recognize when device therapy or advanced support is indicated.

What this track covers

This track covers heart failure from initial classification through advanced management, including HFrEF, HFpEF, and HFmrEF, biomarker interpretation, and diuretic strategies for volume management. It also addresses device therapy selection and the escalation of care in acute decompensated and cardiogenic shock presentations.

What you will practice

  • Distinguish HFrEF, HFpEF, and HFmrEF using ejection fraction and clinical criteria
  • Sequence and titrate the four GDMT pillars in a newly diagnosed HFrEF patient
  • Interpret BNP and NT-proBNP values in the context of confounders like renal function and obesity
  • Work through diuretic resistance and cardiorenal syndrome decision points
  • Identify ICD, CRT, and advanced therapy (LVAD/transplant) candidacy criteria

Simulator scenario

A simulated patient presenting with progressive dyspnea and volume overload, requiring the clinician to classify the HF type, initiate workup, and build a GDMT and diuretic plan across the encounter.

Board question topics

  • HFrEF vs HFpEF vs HFmrEF classification and staging
  • GDMT drug classes and titration sequencing
  • Diuretic strategy and cardiorenal syndrome
  • Device therapy and advanced therapy candidacy
